Who We Are

When you think about estate planning, what do you think of? Not long ago, complex trust based estate plans were available only to the ultra wealthy Rockefellers, Carnegies, and Kennedys. Their personal, family lawyers (who knew them, their assets, and their dealings intimately) spent hundreds of hours crafting and maintaining multi-layered planning strategies to accommodate these families’ plans. Of course, they could afford it.

Fast forward to the early 1990s. As the information revolution and the advent of computers begins to overtake the legal profession, estate planning becomes automated. Plans that were once only available to the ultra wealthy now became available to the common American family, and a new generation of “wills and trusts” attorneys began hawking estate planning documents through seminars, books, and articles. The advent of automated estate planning produced a lack of counselling with the client or relationship with the attorney. Soon the traditional model of the estate planning attorney as the trusted and personal family advisor went by the wayside in favor of a one-size fits all approach designed to serve as many people as possible in a short period of time. While the information age brought increased efficiency and reduced cost to estate planning, it also brought some disastrous results: statistically speaking, approximately 80% of estate plans fail.

David Crandall founded Legacy Planning Advocates in 2008 to eliminate the dismal failure rate of modern traditional estate planning by combining the efficiency and reduced cost of the information age with the personal advisor relationship of a bygone era.
